The Planning Department works to ensure continued and improved effectiveness in making the city of New Haven a desirable place to live and work.
The goal of the Planning Department is to guide New Haven's growth and development through the implementation of adopted development policies and enforcement of land use regulations. Staff also provides professional support to the New Haven Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
The New Haven Planning Department is responsible for maintaining zoning maps for areas within the city's planning jurisdiction.
Zoning & Floodplain Map Viewer
The online Zoning and Floodplain Map Viewer allows users to access zoning district information for a specific property. Users may also view the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMAs) Special Flood Hazard Area delineations.
The viewer includes a toolbar near the top of the map which allows users to select different layers, view a map legend, zoom, and search for an address. To view detailed information about a property click on its location. Please note that the results may include more than one feature (ex: zoning, parcel ownership, etc.) which may be accessed by clicking on the arrows in the right corner of the results box.
Current planning involves administering Title XV "Land Usage" of the New Haven City Code. This typically includes activities such as processing applications for:
- Improvement Location Permits
- Other land use applications
Staff also assists the public with questions related to the zoning code such as zoning classifications, permitted land uses, and development standards.
Long-range planning is a collaborative process that engages the community in an effort to establish the various goals, policies, and objectives for New Haven's future.
The New Haven Comprehensive Land Use and Strategic Economic Plan (PDF) is a document that guides the City's growth and it is used frequently by a variety of decision-makers. The New Haven Planning Department is responsible for the development of the Comprehensive Plan as well as other long-term planning projects and studies.
